Steven Shoptaw, executive director of the Center for Behavioral and Addiction Medicine in the UCLA Department of Family Medicine, will give an invited address on March 11 in Vienna, Austria, at a meeting of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime. The purpose of the U.N. meeting is to develop science-based recommendations on ensuring access to antiretroviral therapies for people living with HIV/AIDS who also use drugs.
Shoptaw is a psychologist and a professor of family medicine as well as psychiatry and biobehavioral sciences at UCLA. Over the past 20 years, he has conducted a series of clinical studies in community clinic settings, primarily on topics that involve developing and testing medical and behavioral interventions to treat substance abuse and prevent the spread of HIV. He works in collaboration with partners from university, government and community settings. He has published more than 180 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters.
In addition, Shoptaw maintains a regular caseload of patients and provides training and mentorship to students and postdoctoral fellows.
