Alison Bailey, a professor in the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies, has been appointed to the National Assessment of Education Progress Standing Committee on Reading by the National Center for Education Statistics. Bailey will be involved in the review of reading assessments that are given to a nationally representative sample of 4th grade students across the country every two years.

Bailey’s expertise is in oral language’s tie to literacy development in relation to English language learner (ELL) students in particular, so her appointment will allow her to assess ELL students’ needs from the earliest phases of development.

Bailey is the 2015 recipient of the Bobbie and Mark Greenfield Faculty Award for Applied Research, which is given each year by the School of Education to recognize the work of a faculty member whose published research has important implications for best practices in teaching elementary and secondary school classrooms. The award recognized for her work on the Dynamic Learning Language Project, which is part of a larger effort to improve the assessment of English language proficiency of elementary school-level ELL students.
