Distinguished law professor Eugene Volokh, the Gary T. Schwartz Professor of Law at the UCLA School of Law, was recently honored with the school's 2017 Alumni of the Year Award for professional achievement.

The fourth-most cited legal scholar by appellate courts between 2010-2014, Volokh teaches free speech law, tort law, religious freedom law, church-state relations law and a First Amendment amicus brief clinic. Before coming to UCLA, he clerked for Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the U.S. Supreme Court and for Judge Alex Kozinski on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.

Along with more than 75 law review articles and 80-plus op-eds, Volokh is the author of the textbooks “The First Amendment and Related Statutes,” “The Religion Clauses and Related Statutes” and “Academic Legal Writing.” He is the founder and co-author of the Volokh Conspiracy, an online blog that gets about 35-40,000 page views per weekday.

Volokh’s work has been referred to by Supreme Court justices, federal circuit courts, district courts and state courts.

Volokh is also an academic affiliate for the Mayer Brown LLP law firm. He consults on other lawyers' cases, but has argued before the Seventh Circuit, the Ninth Circuit, the Indiana Supreme Court and the Nebraska Supreme Court, and has also filed briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court, in the Fifth, Sixth, Eighth, Eleventh and D.C. Circuits, and state appellate courts in California, Michigan, New Mexico and Texas.

Working for 12 years as a computer programmer, Volokh graduated from UCLA with a B.S. in math-computer science at age 15 and has written many articles on computer software. Volokh was born in the USSR, and his family emigrated to the U.S. when he was seven years old.
