Sherry Turkle, founder and director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self, discusses her latest book on Monday, April 18 in the Northwest Campus Auditorium. “Reclaiming Conversation: The Power of Talk in a Digital Age” (Penguin Press, 2015), investigates how a flight from conversation undermines our relationships, creativity and productivity. Turkle's presentation is the latest in the Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series from the UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies.
The Abby Rockefeller Mauzé Professor of the Social Studies of Science and Technology in the Program of Science, Technology and Society at MIT, Turkle has spent 30 years researching the psychology of people’s relationships with technology. Referred to by many as the “Margaret Mead of digital culture,” she has investigated the intersection of digital technology and human relationships from the early days of personal computers to our current world of robotics, artificial intelligence, social networking and mobile connectivity.
Turkle's book will be available for purchase at the event, which begins with a reception at 4:30 p.m., followed by the lecture at 5:30 p.m. Admission is free, but seating is limited and an RSVP is required by Friday, April 15.
