The UCLA Department of Information Studies in the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies presents Marcus Sedgwick, an award-winning young adult fiction author, who will deliver the Frances Clarke Sayers Lecture at UCLA’s Korn Auditorium, UCLA Anderson School, 4-6 p.m on Sunday, April 26. Also that evening, the California Center for the Book will present the winners of the 2015 Letters About Literature competition.
Sedgwick, whose literary influences include Ernest Hemingway, Edgar Allan Poe, and Ian Fleming, received the Branford-Boase Award for his debut novel, “Floodland” (Orion Children's Books, 2000), given annually to new novelists. His lecture will focus on his recent books, “Midwinterblood” (Square Fish, 2014) — winner of the 2014 Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature — and “The Ghosts of Heaven” (Roaring Brook Press, 2015).
The annual Frances Clarke Sayers Lecture is a tribute to former UCLA faculty member Dr. Frances Clarke Sayers (1897-1989), a noted American children’s librarian, author and lecturer. She was a firm advocate for excellence in children’s literature, making her one of the most influential children’s librarians of her generation.
