Experience a unique intersection of art and poetry at “‘Because of slavery’: The Irreverent Art of Kara Walker and Harryette Mullen,” an April 26 program at the Brick. Co-presented by the UCLA College Division of Humanities and the Brick, the event will feature a poetry reading by Mullen against the backdrop of Walker’s widely discussed piece, “Unmanned Drone.”
Walker’s larger-than-life sculpture is part of “MONUMENTS,” an exhibition co-organized and co-presented by the Brick and the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles. The works reckon with narratives implicit in the presentation of a defeated Confederacy, from the Civil War to the present. The coupling of Mullen and Walker’s work engages with the idea that “Because of slavery” is the correct answer to the question: Why did the slaveholding states go to war against the free states of the Union?
Mullen, a professor of English at UCLA, will read from her latest poetry collection, “Regaining Unconsciousness.”
The event is free and open to the public.
