UCLA professor emeritus and photographer Leonard Watts and 25 other talented emeriti faculty and their spouses show their work in the annual Sylvia Winstein Emeriti Arts and Crafts Exhibit on Tuesday, May 17, 11 a.m. – 4 p.m. at the UCLA Faculty Center, California Room. The artists will be introduced during a reception at 2:30 p.m.
Watts began photography as a hobby in 1957 while he was stationed in Japan as a captain in the U.S. Air Force. Upon resuming his academic career at UCLA, he relegated photography to documentation of family events and travel. He returned to photography on a more full-time basis since his retirement.
In the current world of digital photography, Watts noted, “Photographers no longer think in terms of ‘taking’ pictures; instead, we think of ‘making pictures.” The photos he will exhibit are all "made," including “Serra Sculture and Wizard,” in which he sets the archetypal into a photo of a Richard Serra sculpture that stands beside the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture's Eli and Edythe Broad Art Center.
The exhibit, which is open to the public and free of charge, is presented by the UCLA Emeriti Association in cooperation with the UCLA Emeriti/Retirees Relations Center.
