"A Mathematical Theory of Communication," a large-scale, computer-generated installation by Casey Reas, professor of Design Media Arts at the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture, is now on permanent display in the University of Texas (UT) at Austin. The installation is one of three pieces of public art showcased at the university's Bill and Melinda Gates Computer Science Complex. Reas was honored in an opening reception on Oct. 10.

Using mathematical equations and computer software formatting, Reas creates unpredictable and intriguing art. In "A Mathematical Theory of Communication," an image is created through the generation of thousands of images with infinite variations — playing with the idea that information is circling around us at all times in radio waves, microwaves and satellites.

Reas' work has been featured in more than 100 solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums internationally. Learn more about him in Computers as the 21st century pencil and paintbrush and at his website.
