For a group of students at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA — students who came to the U.S. as children, grew up here and are American in every sense except on paper — the challenges of medical school have an additional financial burden. Even while receiving generous support from UCLA, each of them is about $30,000 short on funds every year for their tuition and living expenses. This is because they were undocumented immigrant youth when they came to the U.S. as children and, still undocumented, they are not eligible for federal loans for higher education.
MedDreamers invites you to help by attending the MedDreamers inaugural fundraising luncheon and silent auction on Sunday, Aug. 16, noon-3 p.m., at the Glendon Bar and Kitchen in Westwood. All proceeds from the sale of tickets — $50 early-bird price, $60 regular price — as well as donations will go directly to a scholarship fund for undocumented medical students at the Geffen School.
MedDreamers is a student-led group at the Geffen School that pursues the goals of providing loans and scholarships for undocumented medical students; educating students and faculty about how immigration status impacts students, patients, providers and the community at large; and advocates for policy changes that lead to sustainable solutions for undocumented students pursuing health careers.
