The feature films “Will” (1981) and “Personal Problems” (1980) screen on Saturday, Aug. 21, 7:30 p.m. at the Billy Wilder Theater at UCLA's Hammer Museum. They continue the landmark series, "Tell It Like It Is: Black Independents in New York, 1968-1986," presented by the UCLA Film and Television Archive.
“Will,” considered to be the first feature film by an African American woman, trailblazing writer-director Jessie Maple's Harlem-set debut captures a basketball coach's battle with drug addiction. “Personal Problems,” directed by Bill Gunn, illuminates underrepresented African American realities through a saga about a nurse's aide.
