Allen Roberts, UCLA professor of world arts and cultures/dance, is hosting a lecture on “Striking Iron,” an exhibition he co-curated. The talk will take place at the Fowler Museum on Thursday, Aug. 23 from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.
“Striking Iron” is an international traveling exhibition that reveals the history of invention and technical sophistication that led African blacksmiths to transform one of Earth’s most basic natural resources into objects of utility, empowerment and artistry. The exhibition will include more than 225 artworks from across the African continent, focusing on the region south of the Sahara and covering a time period spanning early archaeological evidence to the present day.
Roberts’ lecture is a part of the Culture Fix series. Culture Fix is a short-format series of gallery talks featuring artists, curators and other luminaries. No reservation is required and the lecture is free.
