Rachel Berks from Otherwild Goods and Services joins the Hammer Museum for a stimulating conversation on Thursday, Aug. 25 at 7:30 p.m. in the Billy Wilder Theater. The discussion will focus on the blurring of lines between art and commerce in society and address the implications of misappropriated ideas by others with differing agendas.
Otherwild – an all-in-one art studio, store and community center – gained recognition in 2015 when Berks produced and began distributing "The Future of Female" graphic tees. The slogan references a shirt originally made for the first women’s library during the 1970’s lesbian separatist movement. As more celebrities wore the shirt from Otherwild, it became a viral hit and exemplifies the crossroads between art, appropriation and commerce. Also taking part in the Hammer discussion are "Made in L.A. 2016" artist Dena Yago and her frequent collaborator, Sean Monahan.
