In conjunction with the exhibition “Making Strange,” the Rangoli Dance Company will perform a late afternoon dance program 4 p.m., Sunday at the Fowler Museum. The dancers will present the Bharatanatyam (classical dances) and Garba (folk dance), which serve as a juxtaposition to the exhibit’s postmodern sculptures created by the Delhi-based contemporary artist Vivan Sundaram.
UCLA alum Malathi Iyengar founded the Rangoli Dance Company in 1992 with the intention of emphasizing and embracing the participation of multidisciplinary artists from diverse cultural backgrounds in her company productions.
The company will showcase the vibrant South Indian dance form Bharatanatyam that involves strong technique, storytelling and intricate gestures, and expressions. Her signature choreography encompasses movement created through layering, juxtaposing and exploring spatial planes.
