UCLA urology has received a $1.9 million award to develop ways to improve the decision-making process for men diagnosed with prostate cancer. The award, granted in June by the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, will fund research on shared decision-making, a process by which patients and their physicians collaborate more effectively on medical decisions about prostate cancer treatment.
Researchers will use the money to investigate the use of an online tool created by Dr. Christopher Saigal, vice chair of urology at UCLA Health, called WiserCare. The software collects information about a person with prostate cancer and predicts prognosis with various treatments. About 1,500 men at UCLA have used the WiserCare program. With the funding the award provides, Saigal and colleagues will measure the tool's adoption and learn how best to scale up its use.
