Aydogan Ozcan, professor of electrical engineering and bioengineering at UCLA's Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science and associate director of the UCLA California NanoSystems Institute, has been named a finalist for the Blavatnik National Awards for Young Scientists.
The awards, established by the Blavatnik Family Foundation and administered by the New York Academy of Sciences, recognize and support America’s top scientific innovators in the life sciences, physical sciences and engineering, and chemistry. The 30 finalists were selected from over 300 nominations of highly qualified faculty-rank researchers, age 42 or younger, from the nation’s leading academic and research institutions. The finalists will compete for the three spots as the 2014 Blavatnik National Laureates, an honor that comes with an unrestricted cash prize of $250,000, the largest prize of its kind for early career scientists.
Ozcan holds 22 issued patents, all of which are licensed, and has more than 15 pending patent applications for his inventions in nanoscopy, wide-field imaging, lensless imaging, nonlinear optics, fiber optics and optical coherence tomography. His recent research involving the medical uses of Google Glass has gained national attention.
