Jorge Torres, associate professor of biochemistry in the UCLA College, has been named the 2019 recipient of the Prize for Excellence in Inclusivity by the American Society for Cell Biology. He will receive $5,000 and will be recognized in December.
The award, made possible by a grant from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, recognizes one scientist with a strong record in research who serves a critical role in fostering cell biology research and has demonstrated the importance of inclusion and diversity in science through mentoring, cultural change, outreach or community service.
Torres demonstrates excellence through his academic record, and also his involvement in initiatives designed to provide opportunities and mentoring to underrepresented groups in science. He works with the UCLA Undergraduate Research Center to identify students with a potential interest in science and teaches them skills for survival in college. He also volunteers at the Society for Advancement of Chicano and Native Americans in Sciences chapter, working with underrepresented students to help them perfect their research proposals.
