Brenda Stevenson, professor of history, has received the John W. Blassingame Award from the Southern Historical Association. The award is given every three years to recognize distinguished scholarship and mentorship in African American history.
Stevenson researches issues of gender, family and community during the slavery era. Stevenson is the author of several books including, most recently, "What is Slavery?" (Wiley, 2015), and the award-winning "The Contested Murder of Latasha Harlins: Justice, Gender and the Origins of the LA Riots" (Oxford University Press).
The winner of UCLA's 2014 Gold Shield Faculty Prize and numerous other awards, Stevenson earned a Ph.D. in history from Yale University.
