Dr. Clifford Ko, professor of surgery at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and director of the UCLA Center for Surgical Outcomes and Quality, has been selected to be part of a new advisory panel for the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute in Washington, D.C. The nonprofit organization, established by Congress in the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010, funds outcomes research designed to help patients and clinicians make better informed health care decisions.
During a three-year term, Ko and others serving on the multidisciplinary panel — including patients, drug and device makers, researchers and caregivers — will apply their expertise and experience to help the organization identify and prioritize research topics for funding. The panel will advise the organization on how best to communicate and disseminate clinical study results so that the information can be used quickly and effectively to improve patient care.
Ko studies measures used to evaluate quality of care in an effort to improve care before, during and after surgery. He also directs the American College of Surgeons’ National Surgical Quality Improvement Program and Division of Research and Optimal Patient Care. In addition, he is a member of the UCLA Jonsson Cancer Center.
