Dr. Gary Small, a professor of psychiatry, director of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry at the Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior and director of the UCLA Longevity Center, received the Arthur Cherkin Award for excellence in medical care, aging research and training doctors in geriatrics.
Awarded by the Multicampus Program in Geriatric Medicine and Gerontology and the Veterans Affairs-UCLA Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program, the honor exemplifies the dedication of its namesake, Arthur Cherkin, a world-renowned neuroscientist and original director of the Veterans Affairs Greater Los Angeles Area Geriatric Research Education and Clinical Centers.
The award recognizes Small’s expertise and commitment to improving medical care of older adults, conducting research on aging and training young doctors in geriatric medicine as part of the multi-campus program. He leads a research team working on innovative technologies and strategies for early detection, prevention and treatment of age-related memory loss. In addition to testing medications that might delay the onset of Alzheimer's Disease, Small has studied and developed healthy aging lifestyle and memory training programs that are available throughout the United States.
