Dr. Gregory W. Hendey has been appointed inaugural chair of the department of emergency medicine in the David Geffen School of Medicine, beginning June 15.
Hendey serves currently as professor of clinical emergency medicine at UC San Francisco School of Medicine and chief of emergency medicine at UCSF Fresno. After earning a B.A. in psychology from the University of Notre Dame and his M.D. at Vanderbilt University Medical School, he completed an internship in medicine and residency in emergency medicine at UCLA, where he served as chief resident in 1992-93. He joined the UCSF Fresno faculty following training and became research director in 2000, vice chief in 2007 and chief in 2012, while simultaneously rising through the UCSF professorial ranks.
Hendey’s appointment was announced in a letter to the UCLA community by Dr. John Mazziotta, vice chancellor, UCLA Health Sciences, and CEO, UCLA Health; and Dr. Kelsey C. Martin, interim dean of the medical school.
“Dr. Hendey is a superb administrator, clinician and educator, overseeing one of the busiest emergency departments in California with a highly regarded trauma center,” they wrote, adding that he served as residency director at Fresno and has served as a mentor to many faculty members, residents and students. His teaching has been recognized with several awards from his trainees, among them the Henry J. Kaiser Award for Excellence in Teaching from UCSF School of Medicine and a National Faculty Teaching Award from the Council of Emergency Medicine Residency Directors.
A committed researcher who has made this a focus of his leadership role, Hendey has collaborated on several multicenter trials funded by federal agencies, including the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality and the Centers for Disease Control. Currently he is a co-principal investigator in the National Institutes of Health-funded PETAL (Prevention and Early Treatment of Acute Lung injury) network. He has published widely and is associate editor of a major textbook in emergency medicine as well as decision editor for the Annals of Emergency Medicine.
