Dr. E. Dale Abel, chair of the department of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, was awarded the Keith Reimer Distinguished Lecture at the International Society for Heart Research World Congress. The event was held May 11–14 in Nara, Japan.
The award, named after the late cardiologist Dr. Keith Reimer, is reserved for distinguished scientists who study ischemia, coronary hemodynamics, cardiac metabolism or contractile mechanisms.
“Whenever I receive an accolade or recognition for my laboratory’s research, I dedicate these awards to the many dedicated colleagues and trainees who have worked in my lab over the years,” said Abel, who is also executive medical director of UCLA Health. “I also hope that our work will make an impact on developing new ways to treat and prevent heart failure and other cardiovascular complications of diabetes.”
His lecture, “Mitochondria, Metabolism and Heart Failure — Beyond ATP,” focused on metabolic mechanisms that lead to heart failure and transcend the traditional view of energy deficiency. He has received funding from the National Institutes of Health for this research since 1995. The American Heart Association, American Diabetes Foundation and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has also funded these studies.
Abel is an elected member of the American Association of Physicians, the American Society for Clinical Investigation, the American Clinical and Climatological Association, the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences. He is past president of the Endocrine Society and the Association of Professors of Medicine.
His awards and recognitions include an honorary doctor of science degree from the University of West Indies, the Fred Conrad Koch Lifetime Achievement Award of the Endocrine Society, and the Robert and Margaret Eckel Endowed Lecture in Cardiometabolic Disease.
