UCLA Graduate School of Education and Information Studies Dean Marcelo Suárez-Orozco was among eight faculty members in the school who were listed in Education Week’s annual “Rick Hess Straight Up Edu-Scholar Public Influence Rankings.”
This year’s roster of nationally renowned scholars and researchers also includes Eva Baker, Distinguished Research Professor; Patricia Gándara, research professor and co-director of the Civil Rights Project/Proyecto Derechos Civiles; Louis Gomez, chair of the education department and the MacArthur Foundation Chair in Digital Media and Learning; Gary Orfield, Distinguished Research Professor and co-director of The Civil Rights Project/Proyecto Derechos Civiles; Mike Rose, research professor; and Robert Teranishi, co-director, UCLA’s Institute for Immigration, Globalization, and Education and the Morgan and Helen Chu Endowed Chair in Asian American Studies. Notably, Professor Orfield was among the top four on the list.
Jeannie Oakes, founder and former director of UCLA’s Institute for Democracy, Education and Access, also represents UCLA on the list. Oakes most recently served as the director of the Ford Foundation and is currently president-elect of the American Educational Research Association.
The list includes 200 honorees and “recognizes university-based scholars in the U.S. who are contributing most substantially to public debates about education.”
“Without fetishizing these lists and rankings, it is nevertheless rewarding to see the excellent work of our faculty acknowledged in a multiplicity of fora,” said Suárez-Orozco. “I am proud and humbled to be in the company of Gary Orfield, Mike Rose, Jeannie Oakes, Patricia Gándara, Robert Teranishi and so many other extraordinary UCLA [Education and Information Studies] colleagues.”
