In a June 23 letter to the campus community, Lubbe Levin, Associate Vice Chancellor, Campus Human Resources, and Mark Speare, Chief Human Resources Officer, Health Sciences, wrote:

The University of California's Employee-initiated Reduction In Time (ERIT) Program has been extended for a three-year period, effective July 1 and running through June 30, 2017. ERIT allows eligible career staff, except senior management group members, to voluntarily reduce their current appointment percentage/working hours and corresponding pay. In exchange, employees receive certain specified advantages, such as accrual of vacation and sick leave at the employees’ pre-ERIT rates.

The popularity of ERIT has grown since its initial implementation, as it provides employees an option to seek work-life balance and results in savings to departments that participate. Last year alone, the estimated savings for the University of California system reached $6.4 million.

For departments that choose to participate in ERIT, an employee may request the department head's approval to voluntarily reduce working time, within specific limits, from a minimum of one month to a maximum of 36 months. For exclusively represented employees, participation in ERIT is subject to agreement by the applicable union.
