“Light out of Darkness,” a feature-length film by UCLA students that documents the lives of 18 Holocaust survivors from the Los Angeles area, premieres on Wednesday, Feb. 17, 4 p.m. in Royce Hall Room 314. The event is sponsored by the UCLA Alan D. Leve Center for Jewish Studies and co-sponsored by the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles and Hillel at UCLA.
The documentary started as the senior film thesis of UCLA student Andrew Rosenstein, who met Holocaust survivor Sophie Zeidman Hamburger — to whom the film is dedicated — when he enrolled in the UCLA course, “Between Memory and History: Interviewing Holocaust Survivors in the Digital Age,” taught by Todd Presner, professor of Germanic languages and comparative literature. Through interviews conducted by the students, the film follows the lives of the survivors through their experiences before, during and after World War II and ultimately comes to illustrate how they came to settle in Los Angeles and make peace with the past.
