On Feb. 21, Deborah Nadoolman Landis, chair and founding director of the David C. Copley Center for the Study of Costume Design at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television’s (TFT), welcomes a stellar group of international costume designers to discuss their craft in “Sketch to Screen: Costume Design Panel and Celebration.” Audience members get an invaluable look into some of the most successful creative minds in Hollywood as panelists’ engage in thought-provoking discussion about the central role costume designers play in cinematic storytelling. Now in its fifth year, the event will take place at UCLA's Schoenberg Hall, with panel discussions starting at 2 p.m.
Panelists this year include Academy Award nominees Mark Bridges (“Inherent Vice”), Milena Canonero (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”), Jacqueline Durran (“Mr. Turner”) and Anna B. Sheppard (“Maleficent”), along with Ruth Carter (“Selma”), Kari Perkins (“Boyhood”) and Albert Wolsky (“Birdman”), who represent three of the eight films nominated this year for Best Picture. The event is presented by Swarovski, TFT Dean Teri Schwartz and the Copley Center, with entertainment news magazine Variety as a media sponsor.
This year, for the first time, the popular “Sketch to Screen” will be a ticketed event. Proceeds will support TFT’s Copley Center, which provides a home for the research and the study of costume design history and the influence of costume design on film, fashion and popular culture. The Center serves TFT students, filmmakers, costume designers and scholars. Ticket prices range from $10 for general admission to $500, which gives patrons a number of benefits including admission to the “Hollywood Costume” exhibition, curated by Landis and located at the future home of the Motion Picture Academy Museum. Last year, the panel was comprised of many of today’s leading costume designers, including Wendy Chuck (“Nebraska”), Daniel Orlandi (“Saving Mr. Banks”) and Trish Summerville (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”), as well as 2014 Academy Award nominee Michael Wilkinson (“American Hustle”) and Academy Award winner Catherine Martin (“The Great Gatsby”).
Panelists in 2013 included Bridges (“Silver Linings Playbook”), Paco Delgado (“Les Misérables”), 2013 Academy Award winner Durran (“Anna Karenina”), Joanna Johnston (“Lincoln”), Kasia Walicka-Maimone (“Moonrise Kingdom”) and Jacqueline West (“Argo”). In 2012, participants included Oscar nominees Lisy Christl (“Anonymous”), Sandy Powell (“Hugo”) and Academy Award winner Bridges (“The Artist”); additional invited guests included Chuck (“The Descendants”) Leesa Evans (“Bridesmaids”), Deborah Scott (“Transformers,” “We Bought a Zoo”) and Christine Wada (“Bridesmaids”).
