Join Sean Metzger for a book talk on February 26 from 12 to 1:30 p.m. in the Charles E. Young Research Library's presentation room. Metzger will discuss his new book "Chinese Looks: Fashion, Performance, Race."
From yellow-face performance in the 19th century to Jackie Chan in the 21st century, "Chinese Looks" examines articles of clothing and modes of adornment as a window on how Americans' view of China has changed in the past 150 years. His talk will focus on three iconic signifiers of Chinese fashion in American culture: the queue (the man's hair braid), the qipao (women's suit) and the Mao suit.
Metzger is an associate professor in the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television whose work focuses on topics in Asian-American society and culture. This event is a presentation by the Asian American Studies Center and the Department of Theater at UCLA.
