From 9 to 10 p.m. this Friday, July 29, Royce Hall, Powell Library and other campus buildings will be lights-out — along with many other buildings throughout Los Angeles — during SwitchOff L.A.Hour.

The event kicks off the citywide, summer-long SaveEnergyLA campaign, an initiative from the office of L.A. Mayor Eric Garcetti intended to raise awareness of simple energy-saving measures that Angelenos, businesses and schools can take to save precious kilowatt hours.

UCLA faculty and staff are encouraged to take part by switching off all computers and non-emergency lights when leaving work this Friday. Conserving energy on campus helps avoid power outages, saves money, reduces GHG emissions and helps achieve the goals of UC President Janet Napolitano’s Carbon Neutrality Initiative.

UCLA Sustainability offers these tips to save energy at work:

  • Wear lighter clothes so you are comfortable when building temperatures fluctuate within an acceptable range/
  • Turn off all lighting not necessary for safety or productivity. If possible, use natural lighting and supplement it with task lighting.
  • Unplug phone chargers and other small electronic devices not necessary for your work.
