Some 1,000 cyclists will raise funds for the UCLA Blood and Platelet Center while enjoying a fresh-air tour of Los Angeles on April 26 during the 18th annual City of Angels Fun Ride presented by Volkswagen. Newly relocated to the UCLA campus, the event allows riders to choose from a challenging 62-mile or 32-mile recreational route.
UCLA patient Brandon Levine, 40, whose life was saved by more than 200 blood transfusions after a horrific motorcycle crash last April, will drive the pace car. The ride takes place on the first anniversary of his accident.
A special ride for children ages 4-11 will be held in memory of Alex Baum, a WWII resistance fighter and concentration-camp survivor who became Los Angeles’ most ardent cycling advocate. Baum’s daughter and granddaughter will attend. Registration for this ride is limited.
Los Angeles Police Department motorcycle officers will escort riders and arrange rolling closures of city streets for car-free cycling. All cyclists are invited to a finish-line festival featuring Sharky’s chicken burritos and raffles for free bicycles and other prizes.
Sponsored each year by Heumann Powered Productions, last year’s ride raised more than $30,000, which the UCLA Blood and Platelet Center used to purchase a new truck to support blood drives at schools and in the community. The registration fee is $80, and participants may register in advance at imAthlete.com.
All rides will begin and end at Dickson Plaza, located between Royce Hall and Powell Library. Free parking will be available in Parking Structure 2. Enter campus from Westholme Avenue off of Hilgard Avenue (map). Volkswagen owners may enjoy VIP parking in Lot A by registering in advance at the event website.
