Gaurav Sant, associate professor and Rice Endowed Chair in Materials Science, received the American Concrete Institute’s 2016 Walter P. Moore, Jr. faculty achievement award, which acknowledges excellence and innovation in the teaching of concrete design, materials or construction.
Sant is recognized “for integrating the study of cementitious materials, including concepts of sustainability and the impact of cement and concrete on the environment, into general undergraduate materials engineering courses and thus encouraging undergraduate student interest in cementitious materials research and the cement-based materials industry.”
His research focuses on the development and design of sustainable low-CO2 footprint materials for infrastructure construction applications. He addresses the practical needs of the construction community by developing “new concretes” for the next generation ofinfrastructure construction applications. Through his research, Sant aspires to rationalize the use of natural resources in construction, promote environmental protection and to advance the cause of ecological responsibility in the concrete construction industry
