UCLA’s Weyburn Terrace, a residential community for 1,800 graduate students, has been recognized by the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNA) with a 2015 CNA Charter Award as an outstanding example of architectural, landscape, urban and regional design.
Weyburn Terrace welcomed its first residents in 2004. Additional work on the property, which was completed 2013, resulted in the construction of a nine-story, tile-roofed building with 500 studio apartments; a commons building and a grand pedestrian promenade.
“This building sensitively integrates a dense housing complex with the adjacent community of Westwood Village,” said Jeffery Averill, UCLA’s campus architect. “The tower motif is an homage and connection to the Village architecture while also marking an important gateway passage to the southwest portion of UCLA’s campus.”
“For the University of California, Los Angeles, the UCLA Weyburn project is more than just graduate student housing," wrote the jury that selected it as winner in its “Block, Street and Building” award category. “The 500-unit apartment block and community building ties together a fragmented part of the university’s campus, realizing the vision of a 30-year-old master plan.”
The jury added that the complex is a landmark for the surrounding neighborhood, noting that it represents a contemporary, community-focused interpretation of the Southern California Mission Revival tradition.
Representatives from Mithun | Solomon and Studios Architecture, Weyburn Terrace's lead firms, accepted the award on April 31 at CNU's 23rd annual conference, held in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas. Nabih Youssef and Associates, UCLA, IBE Consulting Engineers, Kanwar and Associates, KPFF, SWA Group, Technical Resources Consultants and Brightworks were also recognized for their contributions to the project.
