Greg Carman, UCLA professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering, has been awarded the 2015 Smart Structures and Materials Lifetime Achievement Award by the International Society for Optics and Photonics. This award commends the achievements of scientists or engineers in the field of smart structures and materials.
Carman directs the Active Materials Lab at the UCLA Henry Samueli School of Engineering and Applied Science. The lab develops innovative materials for application in automative, aircraft, spacecraft, structural systems and bioengineering. He is also the executive enginerering director of the Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technology in the department of surgery and the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine, and director of the new Center for the National Science Foundation-funded Center for Translational Applications of Nanoscale Multiferroic Materials.
Carman has received numerous awards for his work, and he serves as associate editor of both the Journal of Intelligent Material Systems Structures and Smart Materials and Structures.
Carman's current research focus is concentrated on analytical modeling, fabricating, and testing nanoscale multiferroic (magnetoelectric) materials, while developing devices for medical application.
