Steven Wallace, professor of community health sciences in the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health, was honored by the Health Initiative of the Americas with its inaugural Mario Gutierrez Award on Migrant Health.
Named after health care advocate Mario Gutierrez, the award recognizes people who have dedicated their careers to dignifying the health of migrants.
Wallace, who is also associate director of the UCLA Center for Health Policy Research, has published research on immigrant health for more than 30 years. He is currently the principal investigator of a project funded by the National Institutes of Health that is studying how the experience of state-level policies for immigrants impact their access to health care and health status.
The Health Initiative of the Americas presented Wallace with the award in June at its Summer Institute on Migration and Global Health. The program, located at the University of California Berkeley School of Public Health, aims to produce research, conduct teaching and mentoring and implement service and community engagement programs to reduce the health disparities of less advantaged people of Latino descent in the United States.
