The Fowler Museum at UCLA will present “Singular Spaces," an exhibition on view from April 12 until Sept. 6. that features photographs of Spanish art environments made by self-taught artists across the Iberian Peninsula.
As part of the exhibition, two outings to local art sites in Los Angeles have been organized on behalf of the Fowler Museum. The first of the two is a visit to L.A.’s iconic Watts Towers from 12-4 p.m., Sunday, July 12.
The Watts Towers were constructed between 1921 and 1954-55 by Italian immigrant Simon Rodia. The collection consists of 17 structures that were created by hand and made of steel rods wrapped in wire mesh and coated with cement. Rodia called the collection Nuestro Pueblo (Our Town) because it was embellished with materials such as ceramics, bottles, tiles and shells that were often brought to him by others in the neighborhood.
The second outing entails a visit on August 8 to see the “Phantasma Gloria"sculpture and the” Healthy Foods” mosaic, both located in Echo Park.
Each visit begins and ends at the Fowler Museum, and the ticket price includes transportation and light refreshments. Space is limited to 20 participants. Tickets for one outing only will be $35 for Fowler members; $40 general. Tickets for both outings are: $65 Fowler members; $75 general.
