Assistant Professor Lara Dolecek of UCLA's Department of Electrical Engineering has received funding from NASA to study new coding and signal processing mechanisms to help overcome unreliability in memories used in deep space applications.

The two-year project is titled "Breaking the Limitations of Radiation-Hardened Devices” and will be performed in collaboration with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. This new class of codes proposed by Dolocek and a UCLA/JPL team offers significant coding gains that enable mission-critical communication systems to operate under adverse environments.

Dolecek's research interests are broad and span information and probability theory, graphical models, combinatorics, statistical algorithms and computational methods with applications to high-performance complex systems for data processing, communication, and storage.
