Patricia Turner, vice provost for undergraduate education, will assume responsibility for Summer Sessions and International Education Office (IEO), UCLA Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Scott Waugh announced recently.
Waugh explained in a Sept. 11 memo to deans, directors and other university officials that the change will provide Summer Sessions with academic oversight and leadership and align Summer Sessions more closely with academic priorities. Turner, who oversaw UC Davis’ summer sessions during her tenure there before she came to UCLA, has been meeting with the deans to discuss her ideas, including improving time-to-degree and establishing a faculty advisory committee. Waugh said the highly successful revenue-sharing model will not change.
“The programmatic and administrative infrastructure of Summer Sessions is tightly interwoven with those of the IEO’s international student and study abroad programs,” Waugh explained. Turner is already working closely with C. Cindy Fan, interim vice provost for international studies, and Kal Raustiala, faculty director of international education, to ensure that the international programs administered by IEO will continue to achieve their goals and fulfill faculty and student expectations.
Waugh thanked Hadyn Dick, interim director of Summer Sessions and IEO executive director, and Associate Vice Chancellor Glyn Davies for their leadership in overseeing both units. Davies will to continue manage the revenue-sharing model between Summer Sessions and the departments.
