Award-winning actress Lisa Gay Hamilton will speak at the UCLA Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies on Thursday, May 22, noon-1 p.m., as a part of the center’s “Images in Blackness” film series. Hamilton is known for her role as attorney Rebecca Washington on “The Practice” and as young Sethe in “Beloved.” She performed as an original cast member in the Broadway productions of August Wilson’s “The Piano Lesson” and “Gem of the Ocean,” and acted in Athol Fugard’s “Valley Song.” She also directed the documentary “Beah: A Black Woman Speaks.”
The “Images of Blackness” series features filmmakers and scholars whose work explores the impact and the absence of diverse artists on the entertainment industry. Through this series, the Bunche Center examines the intersection between race, gender and sexuality and focuses on its role in determining acceptance, critical consideration and commercial success in the entertainment industry
Samantha Sheppard, a UCLA Ph.D. candidate in cinema and media studies, will moderate the discussion, which will be held in the Library and Media Center, Room 135, of Haines Hall.
