Join the Hammer Museum for a night of poetry with Evie Shockley, 7:30 p.m., Thursday, March 2.
Shockley is the author of several poetry collections, including “the new black.” Both sparse and lyrical, Shockley’s poems often begin with an active interrogation of received poetic forms and practices, such as capitalization. She has published a critical study, “Renegade Poetics: Black Aesthetics and Formal Innovation in African American Poetry.”
Shockley’s honors include the Stephen Henderson Award for Outstanding Achievement in Poetry, African-American Literature and Culture Society, and the Holmes National Poetry Prize. She has been presented with fellowships from the Millay Colony for the Arts, the American Council of Learned Societies and the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture of the New York Public Library.
Coffee and tea will be served. A book signing with the author will follow.
Admission to the Hammer Museum is free. Early arrival is recommended.
