Margaret Shih, a senior associate dean in the UCLA Anderson School of Management, has been named the next associate vice chancellor, BruinX, which is the multidisciplinary research and development unit within UCLA’s Office of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
In her role, Shih will lead and manage BruinX and its staff by providing scholarly engagement, strategic planning and project management.
“A talented researcher and proven administrator, [Shih] will draw on her experience to ensure that we effectively translate theory and social science into positive policy change and action on the ground,” said Jerry Kang, UCLA vice chancellor for equity, diversity and inclusion in an announcement.
Shih will also serve as a senior member of equity, diversity and inclusion's leadership and provide advice and counsel to Kang, his staff and other senior leaders at UCLA. Shin’s appointment takes effect on July 1.
In her nearly 20 years in academia, Shih has focused on stereotyping, diversity and organizational behavior. She currently holds appointments in the psychology department and UCLA Anderson, where she recently served as the senior associate dean of the fully employed M.B.A. and full time M.B.A. programs. Shih served on the executive committee for the International Society for Self and Identity, the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues and was a consulting editor for a special issue of Journal of Social Issues on multiracial identity.
Shih replaces Devon Carbado, who served in the role for three years. Carbado provided leadership and oversaw a range of programmatic endeavors, research projects and anti-bias initiatives that directly furthered the office’s mission of building equity for all.
“I want to personally thank Carbado for his exceptional service,” Kang said. Hallmark BruinX achievements under Carbado’s leadership include the BruinX Dashboards and the BruinXperience.
