On Wednesday, May 13, the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies at UCLA will host a conversation with John Densmore, a writer, actor and former drummer for the iconic rock group, The Doors.
Densmore, a panel of Bunche Center scholars and the audience will consider the relationship between music and social movements. The program will take up the question of whether Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision of non-violent protest is possible in the 21st century. The Doors' prominence coincided with an exceptionally fertile period for social justice movement and the art which engaged in social issues. In addition to his work as an artist, Densmore has been a civic-minded philanthropist, having established an endowment to support UCLA undergraduate students who major or minor in Afro-American Studies.
Panelists will include filmmaker John Scheinfeld, UCLA aluumna and educator Jalila Salaam and UCLA doctoral student Jonathan Collins. Vanessa Tyson, a visiting assistant professor in the departments of African American studies and political science, will moderate.
The event, which is free and open to the public, takes place from noon to 1 p.m. at the Faculty Center Hacienda Room. Find more information at the Bunche Center.
