Bring your whole family to celebrate Indian arts and culture at the UCLA Fowler Museum's "Arts of India Festival," from 12:30-4 p.m. on Sunday, May 17. The free event runs in conjunction with the Fowler exhibitions “The Sahmat Collective” and “Making Strange.”
The day festivities begin with family yoga on the museum’s beautiful outdoor terrace, followed by Indian music and dance. Afterwards, let your imagination go wild: Using artist Vivan Sundaram’s inventive sculptures and garments as a jumping-off point, participants will adorn mannequins with messages related to themes of environmental preservation and global health, and create your own spectacular garments made from recycled materials. At 3 p.m., the Gaga-Walk-A Fashion Show Contest invites participants to strut their stuff, showcasing the wearable works of art created in the workshop or brought from home. Participants of all ages may enter in the following three categories: Recycled/Unconventional Materials, Creative Consciousness, and Avant-Garde.
Throughout the day, a henna artist, inspired by the popular form of body art in South Asia, will be available to paint visitors with designs that emphasize peace, acceptance and justice.
