Meet the journalist and cartoonist creators of the graphic novella, "Terms of Service: Understanding Our Role in the World of Big Data" (Al Jazeera America, 2014), during two presentations on Tuesday, May 19 in the Charles Young Research Library conference room. Attendees will receive a print copy of the book, which the authors will be available to autograph. The novella is also available in digital form here.

The novella, which takes readers on a practical journey toward understanding digital-age privacy in everyday life, is by Michael Keller, a multimedia reporter at Al Jazeera America, and Josh Neufeld, a nonfiction cartoonist, who chose to adopt the comics medium in the journalism context to convey complex issues in a very accessible manner.

During a morning session from 10-11:30 a.m., they will share excerpts from the book and discuss their collaborative process. An audience discussion will follow. The event is free but space is limited and reservations are requested. RSVP here.

During an afternoon session from 2-3:30 p.m., "Picture the Possibilities: Using Comics as Scholars or Citizen Journalists" for students, faculty, journalists and editors, Keller and Neufeld will explain their creative process and how they used this visual form to illuminate an extremely complex issue, suggesting new formats for published research. Keller will also suggest how today’s citizen journalists, armed with smart phones and social media accounts, can embrace possibilities and avoid pitfalls. Free, but RSVP here.

These events are co-presented by the UCLA Library and the Office of UCLA Chief Privacy Officer Kent Wada.
