Join in conversation with the Maricón Collective and engage with the works being donated by the artists to the Chicana/o Studies Research (CSRC) Library archives. The event takes place 3-5 p.m., Thursday, May 21 at the CRCS library, 144 Haines Hall.
The Maricón Collective was formed in the spring of 2014 as a queer Chicano/Latino DJ and artist collective with the hope of bringing Queer POC people together through dance and celebration. Reappropriating the once negative connotation of the term Maricón, they have participated in creating visibility for a new generation. In addition to developing a cult following via social media and hosting various fundraising community events, they have also collaborated with Chicana/o artists such as Alice Bag, Joey Terrill, and Shizu Saldamando.
This event is curated by Juan Fernandez, an undergraduate senior majoring in Chicana/o studies and minoring in LGBT studies. Co-sponsors are the UCLA César Chavez Department of Chicana/o Studies, La Familia de UCLA, Qscholars of UCLA, the Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Commission, the UCLA LGBT Program, and the CSRC.
