UCLA computer resource specialist Michael Fehr and UC San Francisco's Naomi Nakamura have been elected staff representatives to the University of California Retirement System Advisory Board.
More than 7,500 staff members cast ballots in the election, with Fehr and Nakamura receiving the most votes in a field of six candidates.
Fehr, who has worked at UCLA for 28 years, provides desktop support to UCLA’s Biomedical Library staff and users. He is a member of the University Professional and Technical Employees (UPTE) union.
“I want all UC staff to have the most secure retirement possible at a cost that staff can afford,” Fehr said.
Nakamura has worked at UCSF Medical Center as a pharmacy technician for four years. She is a member of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).
“I want to make sure that the health of UC’s pension plan is protected and that it continues to serve as an important tool to attract and maintain UC faculty and staff,” Nakamura said.
Fehr and Nakamura will join the advisory board July 1, and will serve a four-year term. They become part of the 11-member advisory group representing a cross-section of the university community, including two members selected by the Academic Senate; UC’s Chief Investment Officer; members appointed by UC President Janet Napolitano; and chairs of the Council of UC Emeriti Associations and Council of UC Retiree Associations.
The board meets a minimum of three times a year to discuss and share its opinions with UC leadership relating to all members, retirees and their beneficiaries for the following plans:
- University of California Retirement Plan (UCRP)
- Tax-Deferred 403(b) Plan
- 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan
- Defined Contribution Plan
