As of July 1, several centers and programs at the UCLA International Institute will have new directors and associate directors, and the Institute itself will have a new associate vice provost.
Gail Kligman, professor of sociology, has been named the new associate vice of International Studies at the UCLA International Institute. The position was most recently held by UCLA law professor Kal Raustiala, who will continue to serve as director of the Burkle Center for International Relations and faculty director of the International Education Office.
Professor Laure Murat of the department of French and Francophone studies will become director of the Center for European and Eurasian Studies, a post held by Kligman for the past 10 years.
The African Studies Center will welcome as its new director Steven Nelson, professor of African and African American art in the department of art history. Ghislaine Lydon, associate professor of history and the current chair of the graduate African Studies Academic Program of the Institute, has been named the center’s associate director. Françoise Lionnet, distinguished professor of French and Francophone Studies, will be stepping down from her positions as director and member of the Institute’s Faculty Executive Committee.
The Center for Near Eastern Studies will be led by new director Aslı Bâli, associate professor at the UCLA School of Law, starting winter quarter 2016. Gabriel Piterberg, professor of Near Eastern history in the department of history, has stepped down from his position as director, and until Bali assumes that post, professor of history James Gelvin and professor of anthropology and Near Eastern languages and cultures Susan Slyomovics — both longtime faculty associates of the center — will serve as interim co-directors.
At the Center for Korean Studies, associate professor of Asian languages and cultures Namhee Lee will join professor of history John Duncan as co-director.
The International Institute’s new minor in global health, an interdisciplinary course of study set to begin in fall quarter, 2015, will be chaired by Dr. Michael Rodriguez, a professor of family medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine, director of the UCLA Blum Center on Poverty and Health in Latin America and co-director of the Center of Expertise on Migration and Health.
