A new fund has been created at UCLA to support the campus’s international programs, students studying abroad, faculty engaging in international research, partnerships with foreign institutions and other activities that enhance UCLA’s global reputation. The Elwin “Sven” Svenson Memorial Fund for International Studies and Engagement honors the life and work of the former UCLA vice chancellor, whose longtime engagement in international studies and collaborative research at UCLA dates back to the late 1950s. The new fund was initiated by Svenson’s children.

Svenson served as UCLA’s vice chancellor for institutional relations from 1975 to 1991. He contributed to a multitude of projects and departments while vice chancellor including the department of intercollegiate athletics, the UCLA Center for the Performing Arts programs, the UCLA Museum of Cultural History, which he conceived of transforming into the Fowler Museum, and the establishment of International Studies and Overseas Programs, the immediate predecessor of today’s UCLA International Institute.
