Six Academic Senate faculty members and three non-Senate faculty have been selected to receive the 2016 Distinguished Teaching Award. In addition, five graduate student have been selected to receive the Distinguished Teaching Assistant Award.
As one of the highest honors given by the Academic Senate, the Distinguished Teaching Award recognizes academically and professionally accomplished individuals who bring respect and admiration to the scholarship of teaching. Recipients are selected from nominations received by colleagues and leaders across the campus. The winners will be honored during the annual Andrea L. Rich Night to Honor Teaching ceremony in the fall, an event co-hosted by the Academic Senate and the UCLA Office of Instructional Development.
The Senate faculty honorees are:
Mark Goorsky, a professor of materials science and engineering, receiving the Eby Award for the Art of Teaching
James Lloyd-Smith, associate professor of ecology and evolutionary biology, receiving the Undergraduate Mentorship Award
Steven Margulis, professor of civil and environmental engineering
Joseph Bristow, professor of English
Frank Laski, professor of molecular, cell and developmental biology
Elisabeth Le Guin, professor of music and musicology
The non-Senate faculty honorees are:
Dr. Ting-Ling Chang, clinical professor at the UCLA School of Dentistry
Jeremy Smoak, lecturer in Near Eastern languages and cultures
Greg Rubinson, lecturer in the UCLA Writing Programs
The graduate student teaching assistant honorees are:
- Rebecca Hill, department of English
- Ronny Choe, department of integrative biology and physiology
- Christopher Begeny, department of psychology
- Mac Bunyanunda, global studies interdepartmental program
- Lourdes Arevalo, department of Spanish and Portuguese
