For 50 years, UCLA Film and Television Archive has collected and conserved moving images relevant to Los Angeles in its real and imagined forms. Following its sold-out, two-day symposium, "This is the City: Preserving Moving Images of Los Angeles," to illuminate the lost history and landscapes of Los Angeles, a series of films will be screened at the Billy Wilder Theater from Nov. 15, (“Spirits of Rebellion: Black Cinema from UCLA”) through Dec. 14 (“Los Angeles in the Newsreels”).
On Nov. 20, for example, booster dreams and noirish visions will comingle in a program covering almost 60 years of Los Angeles history as seen through a selection of travelogues, industrial films and amateur movies. “Ephemera(l) City: Los Angeles in Travelogues, Industrial Films and Amateur Movies” will take place at 7:30 p.m. Capturing the ever-shifting landscapes and fortunes of the city will be Ford Motor Company’s silent-era portrait of a booming young metropolis. Also to be screened will the Department of Water and Power’s early 1970s promotion of an imminent, water-drenched Pacific Rim economic explosion, street-level views of Depression-era downtown and the end of the Pacific Electric railway. Live musical accompaniment will be provided for the silent portion of this program.
