UCLA presents “Beyond the Lights,” the acclaimed 2014 romantic drama written and directed by UCLA alumna Gina Prince-Bythewood, on Wednesday, Oct. 14, at the James Bridges Theater in Melnitz Hall. A reception starts at 6 p.m., followed by the screening at 7 p.m. A discussion with Prince-Bythewood will take place after the film is shown.
The film tells the story of a talented but emotionally fragile young singer who is saved from a suicide attempt by a concerned cop with political aspirations. Although they fall in love, the powers that be conspire to keep them apart as they try to find their paths in very different careers.
ABC News Radio said: “’Beyond the Lights’ is a surprising film buoyed by a terrific performance from star Gugu Mbatha-Raw, opposite the vastly underrated Nate Parker.”
The event is being presented by UCLA Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost Scott Waugh, the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs, the UCLA Department of African American Studies, the UCLA Institute of American Cultures and the Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies.
