The UCLA La Kretz Center for California Conservation Science, in partnership with the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County, presents an evening with cat experts discussing feline ecology, their role in human health and happiness and their place in the concrete jungle.
"MEOW — A Cat Discussion" takes place on Thursday, Oct. 22, 6-9 p.m. at the Natural History Museum, 900 Exposition Boulevard, Los Angeles, California, 90007. Doors open at 6 p.m., and discussion starts at 7 p.m., followed by a Q&A.
While cats are cute and cuddly — and their memes are Internet gold — new studies indicate that they have a negative impact on native biodiversity and are a threat to human health. The evening’s discussion includes management practices that can help make L.A. city a better place for cats, the people who own them and our native wildlife.
Moderating is Peter Kareiva, professor and director of the UCLA Institute of Environment and Sustainability and a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences. Panelists include Maria Solacito, veterinary chief of staff for L.A. County’s Department of Animal Care and Control; Eric Strauss, President's Professor of Biology and executive director of the Loyola Marymount University Center for Urban Resilience; and Stanley Gehrt, professor and wildlife specialist at Ohio State University.
