Thom Mayne, Distinguished Professor of Architecture and Urban Design and director of the UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture's Suprastudio and Now Institute, will give a lecture on Monday, Oct. 26, 6:30 p.m. in Perloff Hall's Decafe. All are welcome to the free event.
Mayne is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Pritzker Prize in 2005 and the American Institute of Architects Gold Medal in 2013. In 1972, he founded the architectural firm Morphosis as an interdisciplinary, collective practice dedicated to experimental design and research. Morphosis has received 25 Progressive Architecture Awards, over 100 American Institute of Architecture Awards and numerous other design recognitions. The firm has been the subject of various group and solo exhibitions throughout the world, including a large solo exhibition at the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati, the Walker Arts Institute in Minneapolis and a major retrospective at the Netherlands Architectural Institute.
Throughout his career, Mayne has been active in the academic world. In 1972, he helped to found the Southern California Institute of Architecture. Since then, he has held teaching positions at Columbia University, Yale, the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the Berlage Institute in the Netherlands, the Bartlett School of Architecture in London, and many other institutions around the world.His contributions to architectural education include the highly regarded L.A. Now and Madrid Now initiatives.
